The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a critical gateway for aspiring law students in India, offering a standardized and merit-based pathway to the prestigious National Law Universities (NLUs) and other top law colleges. By providing a uniform assessment of candidates’ aptitude in areas such as legal reasoning, logical analysis, and general knowledge, CLAT ensures a fair and transparent selection process. It opens doors to quality legal education and diverse career opportunities in law, judiciary, corporate sectors, and academia. Additionally, CLAT’s role in facilitating admissions and even recruitment by public sector undertakings underscores its significance in shaping the future of legal professionals in India.

History of CLAT :

CLAT’s inception as the common test may be traced back to the 2007 lawsuit Varun Bhagat v. Union of India, in which a parent of a law aspirant asked for a centralised test. Following this, the first Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) was held in 2008 for seven national law universities.

CLAT expanded to include seven other national law school in 2014. This time, the exam took place online. However, a permanent secretariat for the CLAT consortium remained elusive. Professor Shamnad Bashir filed a PIL in 2015 demanding an institutionalised system with a permanent secretariat to conduct CLAT. The case eventually led to the formation of the CLAT Consortium in Bengaluru in 2018.

The CLAT exam mode has also been altered from online to offline.

Previously, national law universities conducted the CLAT on a rotating basis. CLAT now has a permanent secretariat and is led by a seven-member executive committee that includes a convenor, president, vice-president, secretary-treasurer, and others.

As of 2024, CLAT scores are accepted by 24 of 26 national law school. NLU Delhi and the freshly founded NLU Meghalaya hold different entrance tests. NLU Delhi conducts the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET), whereas NLU Meg organises MEG-UAT and MEG-PAT for admissions to UG and PG programs.
