Who is Eligible for the CUET Exam?

Sep 19, 2023

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) has emerged as a game-changer in the landscape of undergraduate (UG) admissions in India. It provides a standardized platform for students to gain entry into some of the most prestigious universities across the country. However, eligibility criteria play a pivotal role in determining who can take the CUET exam.

1. Educational Qualifications:

The primary eligibility criterion for CUET is educational qualifications. To be eligible, a candidate must have completed their senior secondary education (Class 12th or equivalent). The specific educational qualifications required may vary depending on the UG program and university you wish to apply to.

2. Minimum Percentage:

Many universities that accept CUET scores set a minimum percentage requirement for eligibility. This percentage requirement can vary from one university to another and may also differ for different UG programs. For instance, some universities may require a minimum of 50% in the qualifying examination, while others may have a higher or lower threshold.

3. Age Limit:

CUET does not typically have an upper age limit for candidates. Unlike some other entrance exams, it is open to candidates of all ages. This means that individuals who may have taken a gap year or are looking to change their field of study later in life can still appear for the CUET exam.

4. Subject-Specific Eligibility:

Certain UG programs may have subject-specific eligibility criteria. For instance, if you are applying for a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) program, you may need to have studied specific subjects in your 12th-grade curriculum, such as physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Similarly, if you’re aiming for a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) program, there might be specific subject prerequisites like history, political science, or economics.

5. Domicile Requirements:

In some cases, universities may have domicile requirements. This means that candidates from a particular state or region may have preference or eligibility for certain UG programs. It’s essential to check whether the university you’re interested in has any such domicile requirements.

6. Reservation Categories:

CUET, like many other entrance exams in India, has reservation categories for candidates from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), and Persons with Disabilities (PWD). Eligibility criteria and reservation percentages may vary for these categories, so it’s crucial to be aware of the specific requirements.

7. International Students:

CUET is not limited to Indian nationals. International students who meet the eligibility criteria can also apply for the exam. However, they may need to provide additional documentation, such as proof of English language proficiency.

8. Other Requirements:

In addition to the above, some universities may have specific requirements, such as a certain score in a standardized English language proficiency test like TOEFL or IELTS for international students.

Conclusion:

Eligibility for the CUET exam can vary from university to university and program to program. It’s imperative to carefully review the eligibility criteria set by the university you wish to apply to. Additionally, keep in mind that CUET aims to provide opportunities for a diverse range of students, so candidates from various backgrounds and age groups can find their path to higher education through this entrance test.
